History
 

Singapore Canoe Federation was founded in 1971 to promote canoeing activities.

As a National Sports Association under the Singapore Sports Council and an affiliate of the International Canoe Federation and the Asian Canoe Confederation, we represent Singapore in matters of canoeing. Representing Singapore are also our Kayakers in the National Racing Squad, who have had participated in Asian Games, SEA Games, Asian Canoeing Championships and SEA Canoeing Championships.

As a non-profit organisation, SCF is managed by volunteers from various sea sports clubs and organisations. The Singapore Sports Council and Singapore Pools Pte. Ltd. are our main sponsors. Under SCF, there are two Olympic disciplines: Canoe Sprint & Canoe Slalom.

SCF's affiliates has increased from 22 in the year 2002 to today of 28 affiliated members, mainly are the associate membership from individuals and organisation with canoeing business or activities.

In 2002, SCF has achieved, funding and facilities for permanent office, classroom, storage area, coaches and secretariat support. We also achieved another milestones in our history by helping Autism Association Singapore to raise fund. The fund has provided crucial financial support for the Autism Association's programmes.

Kayaking Personal Skills courses were introduced to all racing competitors by schools in the earlier year 2001. An approximately 6,000 pieces of certificates for Personal Skills award was issued to the participants from various affiliates and schools that assessed and passed.

Since 2007, issuing of certificates has reached average 22,000 certificates per year. The Personal Skills Award continue to be a key strategy to identify talent for the National Team. In 2001, SCF launched junior program: Junior Power, where kids at the age of 9 years were introduced to canoeing. After the launch of Junior Power Programs, a group of Junior canoeists were recurited and subsequently form the Junior National Team in 2006. In 2003, SCF managed to clinch 2 Bronze Medal in Vietnam at the SEA Games and in Y2009 SEA Games, SCF clinched 3 Bronze Medals. In 2010, SCF achieve a major milestone by sending 6 athletes to compete in Asian Games 2010 in China.

In March 2004, SCF open and operates the first public paddling centre in MacRitchie Reservoir: PaddleLodge@MR and subsequently in August 2010, second paddling centre begin operation in Pandan Reservoir: PaddleLodge@Pandan. The paddling centre program is an collaboration between SCF and PUB to introduce the water sports to the general public.

Joseph Ang Zason Chian Chua Kee Huat Henry Sim Leng Chin Beng Yip Kwan Guan Agnes Lim Peck Har In 2009, SCF's key official were elected in the Internationa and Regional Federation as Council Member. Mr CHUA Kee Huat, were elected to be Board Member for International Canoe Federation and Asian Canoe Confederation, while Mr. Henry SIM were elected to be Treasurer for Asian Canoe Confederation.

Abide by the constitution, the election of council members are elected every 2 years.

Together as a team, and with the help of all affiliated members, the council members will drive the Federation a step further by exploring new activities and continue to promote canoeing and kayaking in Singapore.
