 FIVE STAR Award (RIVER)

Aim: This is an environment specific journeying award to be designated and endorsed for "River". It confirms the candidate's competence at an advanced level to journey on the most demanding water, requiring the highest level of judgement and technical skills, including the ability to lead a group at this level.

Environment:

 On white water river with  sections of not less than  Grade IV

Type of Craft:

 River- general prupose, closed cockpit  white-water kayak

Pre-Entry Requirement:

  1. Four Star Award (River)
  2. Hold a valid first aid certification
  3. Log book showing required previous experience


Trainer / Assessor:

 Level 5 Coaches


Theory

  • General knowledge of canoe sports
  • Knowledge of sea kayaks and related equipments
  • Understanding of all matters pertaining to planning a sea journey
  • Knowledge of buoyage
  • Knowledge of meteorlogical issues and weather information
  • Technical Skills

    • Organise and lead an expedition for a group for River Award of at least four, experienced, whitewater kayakers on a river expedition, which includes sections of uo to Grade IV rapids
    • Demonstrate the ability to establish a clear plan, including such logistic support as is necessary
    • Demonstrate sound judgment in choice of both personal kit and additional group equipment, making due allowance for the ability of the group
    • Demonstrate sound leadership and group control throughout the journey, including facilitation of briefing/discussion and choice of rapid-running strategies, and the ability to make sound judgement in risk assessment and overall safety awareness
    • Demonstrate the ability to setup a variety of systems and techniques for rescue cover on more difficult rapids, including the retrieval of kayaks and equipment
    • Demonstrate a solid base of personal skills, including all those required at Level Four but performed with confidence on more demanding water

    Journey Experience

    • Produce a log-book showing evidence of at least 20 "quality" river journeys at the required standard on a minimum of 10 different rivers and with any one section of river repeated no more than twice.

    Written Examination

    The candidates will answer questions to demonstrate:

    • Wide unerpinning knowledge of general kayaking matters.
    • Sound specific knowledge of matters pertaining to whitewater kayaking
    • Good understanding of all matters pertaining to planning a difficult river journey
